The Chemistry of Sex-V

Serotonin - Increased Feel of Intimacy

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter synthesized from trytophan in serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system. It modulates anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep and sexuality. Low serotonin levels can result in decreased feeling of intimacy.

Serotonin is found in many mushrooms and plants, including fruits and vegetables.

Serotonin intake can be in the form of supplements or thorough hormones. Serotonin is present in the following supplements and hormones.

Supplements :

1.Tryptophan
2.Vitamin B6.
3. Fish oils
4. Magnesium

Hormones :

1.Progesterone.
2.Human growth hormone.
3.Melatonin.

Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) - Enhancing Orgasms

Orgasm release is controlled by the body`s level of GABA. GABA is an important inbitory neurotransmitter in CNS (Central Nervous System).
GABA enhancing compounds, also enhances Dopamine, resulting in more sexual satisfaction.
GABA is present in the following supplements and hormones

Supplements :

1.GABA
2.B vitamins
3.Inositol
4. Glycine

Hormones :

1.Progestrone
2.Pregnenolone
3.DHEA
4.Glucagon like peptide-1.

Acetyl Choline - Arousal

Acetyl choline is a neurotransmitter found in many animals including humans.Acetylcholine is synthesized in certain neurons by the enzyme choline acetyltransferase from the compounds choline and acetyl-CoA. Acetyl choline functions as a neuromodulator.

Arousal is initiated by acetylcholine. Lower levels of acetyl choline results in loss of arousal, drynesss, affects the semen volume in men. Also decreased acetylcholine levels affects cognitive functioning such as memory, attention and creativity.

The structure of acetyl choline is
However it is not as powerful as Dopamine in regulating the sexual desire.

The following supplements and hormones, contain acetyl choline .

Supplements :

1. choline
2. Dimethylaminoethanol
3. Fish oils

Hormones :

1.Human Growth hormone
2. Vasopressin
3. DHEA
4.Parathyroid hormone

Dopamine -Desire

Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter. Dopamine has many functions in the brain, including important roles in behavior and cognition, motor activity, motivation and reward, inhibition of prolactin production (involved in lactation), sleep, mood, attention, and learning. The most significant role it assumes is that of enhancing the "Desire". It acts on the sympathetic nervous system to control Libido, Aggression and Power. It increases blood pressure and hence increased heart rate.

Dopamine was discovered in 1958 by Arvid Carlsson and Nils-Åke Hillarp at the Laboratory for Chemical Pharmacology of the National Heart Institute of Sweden.
The structure of Dopamine is

It finds use as ligand in many signifcant synthetic transformations. Loss of libido, reduced interest in sex and decreased energy for sex are the results of low levels of dopamine. However, the exact involvement of dopamine in the control of sexual motivation and genital arousal in males is unknown.

The Chemistry of Sex-I

Recently, there was an interesting seminar about the "Molecules" involved in the Sexual activity of men and women.
Neurotransmitters and Hormones, are necessary to posses a healthy sexual life.Their concentration, production vastly affects the sexual activity in human beings.

Based on Neurotransmitters, Sexual activity is classified as four important stages

1. Desire
2. Arousal
3. Enhancing Orgasm
4. Increasing Intimacy or Improving Resolution.

The Neurotransmitters that are responsible for these feelings /action are as follows.

1. Dopamine-Desire
2. AcetylCholine-Arousal
3. GABA (Gamma Butyric Acid)- Enhancing Orgasm
4. Serotonin- Improving Resolution.

Let us look at them in detail in next few sections.
